Papercutting Exhibition

I took a few pictures of the gallery space where my three collages are up in the Papercutting Exhibition. The exhibition is open from December 12th - January 4th. Below you can see "Orange Plains," "Pink Flower," and "Figure Seated by the Counter." I'm a fan of the collage that was hanging in between my landscape and flower collages.

At the moment, I'm done with this one. I'm ready to move on to a bunch of mini collages. I'll try to get started on a couple of them tomorrow.

Progress Picture #2: Snacking

Hopefully this one will be done in a couple more days/collaging sessions. We shall see...

Progress Picture

I haven't had a chance to work on this one very much, but so far I've been trying to take care of the background before tackling the figure. That way the paper that I collage for the figure will be in the foreground, overlapping the paper used to make the background.

If I had it my way, I'd collage every day. However, things have been pretty busy, and I shall do my best to set aside time for my art.

Obama Series

Due to a request, I've decided to work on a few Obama portraits. This one is the first that's been completed in the series--and it's a mini portrait. I think I'll make the other ones around the same size.

Seasons Series: Winter Coffee

"Winter Coffee"
Coated paper on mat board
7"x5"

I'm taking a night class in graphic design and for our next class, our assignment is to create four images that reflect the four seasons based on color scheme and/or subject matter. I decided to do coffee and tea for my series. We have to use color packets of coated paper for the project, so I'm in my comfort zone since the project involves collaging, however, I'm not accustomed to using plain paper. This piece is the first one I completed in the series--the cool colors and the steam represent the coldness of winter.

Art in City Hall Exhibition

"Benjamin" and "The Artist from a Distance" were accepted into the "Art in City Hall" juried exhibition. The pieces will be on display in City Hall, located in Old Town of Alexandria, Virginia. The exhibition will run from November 17, 2008 until June 19, 2009.

I did some blocking-in with color on a sketch I did a few days ago. I'll also try to look through my photographs tonight to find anything that might have some potential with being turned into a future collage.

Small Works Exhibition

My piece, "The Curious Kitten," was juried into the "Small Works Exhibition" in the Art League Gallery in Old Town of Alexandria, Virginia. The piece won an honorable mention, awarded by the juror Susan Frank. It will be up in the gallery from November 6 - 30, 2008

Here's a quick collage I did today. I'm going to get started on something else as well, and hopefully I'll be able to post more this week. Things have been extremely busy for me, so I'll try my best to work on more artwork.

Progress Picture #1: Snacking

Here's a light sketch of the next portrait I'm planning to do. I'll probably work on sketching out a couple more future portraits tonight.

And thanks for every one's feedback. I'm planning on submitting the gorilla and the kitten collage for an upcoming juried miniatures exhibition.

The Curious Kitten

Here's the third mini collage I've done. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to enter this one into the miniatures juried exhibition. However, for my second entry, I'm not sure if I should enter the mini portrait or mini portrait of a gorilla--both are collages that I posted below. Any ideas on which one I should choose would be much appreciated.

Mini Portrait and News of Exhibitions

"Figure up-close"

Today I heard back about the solo exhibition I applied for--turns out I've been selected to have an exhibition. This will be my first solo exhibition and it won't be until 2010--the month of the exhibition is yet to be determined. So now I know what I'll be doing in the year 2009--lots of portraiture collaging in order to prepare for this.

Portrait of a Gorilla

"Portrait of a Gorilla"
5"x7"

I think it's funny that the gorilla went from looking like an angry and wild creature to a wizened and contemplative animal. I'll set this one aside and perhaps work on it more some other day. But for now, it's finished.

Hope you had a happy Monday!

Gorilla Progress Picture

A miniature exhibition is coming up so I started this gorilla portrait for it. The piece is 5"x7" and since I'm not used to working so small, I decided to put down fragments of actual photos of gorillas to aide me in the composition of this piece. You can see I haven't quite collaged every spot, but I'm getting there.

I'm realizing I've really been slacking on the posts in October. Let's hope November will be better.

Louie

"Louie"
9"x12"
Collage on cardboard

The dog collage I did before this one was of a dog that I thought was named Louie. Turns out this is the real Louie, and the last dog was Jonny. Anyway, I finished my last dog portrait in the series of commissioned pieces for one of my clients. Next week I have a meeting at a gallery that might possibly put my work on display.

I've been extremely busy with work these days, but now things have cooled down and I will be able to focus more on art making (hopefully). I'll try to get started on another piece tonight or tomorrow night. I hope everything is going well with everyone!

Exhibition Prep

Today I'm getting started on my fifth dog portrait (the last in a series of commissions for one of my clients). I also worked on choosing pieces to submit for the solo jurying process that will occur in about a week or so--I had to pick five pieces and the ones I chose are listed below. I worked on framing four of the pieces and then packing them up in paper. The third image below is the fifth piece that I haven't gotten around to framing just yet.

Art on the Avenue

Art on the Avenue was yesterday and I thought it was a great experience. However, I'm not sure if I'll do any outdoor festivals in the future. If I do, I'll have to work on building my inventory up. Also, I think I should have more prints of my artwork as opposed to actual works of art. I noticed that many of the people liked buying cheaper items--such as my magnets and cards. I thought it was overall, a successful day, and I enjoyed hearing what people thought of my work, as well as sharing it with more people in the community. It's been quite an experience, searching for the right market for my work.

Below I have a few pictures of my booth during the event:

I have one more collage to do in this commission series before I'm finished. In other news, I'm working on last minute work for Art on the Avenue which will be on Saturday. This will be my first time ever doing an outdoor festival. Depending on how much I like it, I may or may not do more in the future.

I've been quite busy these days. I'm working on the paper work for a jurying process for the possibility of having a solo exhibition as well as getting last minute things squared away for Art on the Avenue. Hopefully I can start working on artwork like crazy in a couple of weeks.

Self-Portrait Exhibition Opening Reception

I've been super busy these past few days. I actually have two jobs at the moment, so I haven't been able to work on my artwork as much as I'd like to. I've also been working on organizing my booth for Art on the Avenue in October, and I've been thinking about applying for a solo exhibition at the Art League Gallery. If I do apply for the solo exhibition, that means I'll be even busier during the next two weeks. And finally, I'm thinking of redoing my portfolio website to make it easier for me to update it in the future as well tweak the layout for a better look. So I will try my best to work on art for blog updates, but if I haven't posted in a while, you'll know why :)

Below I have a few pictures from the opening reception of the self-portrait exhibition that I went to on Friday. I was surprised to see that I was awarded Best in Show for the portrait piece, "The Artist from a Distance." The first picture below is of myself and the winning piece.

Picture-Me: The Artistic Self Portrait in the 21st Century

Three of my self portraits were accepted into the Del Ray Artisans exhibition, "Picture Me." The exhibition will run from September 12th till October 4th. The first collage listed below was actually the last piece I finished during my last semester of college. The second one is a piece I did towards the end, when I was experimenting with the idea of a 'half-finished' collage. I also submitted the most recent self portrait I've done, Self Posed in front of Pink.

Sketch of Commission Piece

Here's a sketch of the next dog portrait, BB. I'll get started on collaging this one tonight and will definitely have time to work on it tomorrow.

Finished for Now

"Self Posed in front of Pink"
18"x24"

So I decided I'm finished with this for now. It looks slightly like me--I've realized that I've always had trouble doing self-portraits. It's so much easier to create works of other people. Perhaps this is because I assume I know what I look like, and therefore I have trouble getting the details down right. I might return to this at a later time, but for now, I've decided I'm done.

Progress Picture #2

I ended up working on my portrait a little bit tonight, so here's what I've done so far. I need to reshape the face and finish blocking in the color before I start refining the details.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor-Day, and I'll make sure that I respond to your comments tomorrow night since it's about time I go to sleep now.

Getting Started

I just started with my self-portrait--of course it has a long way to go before being finished, but here's the rough sketch and blocking-in of color that I've done thus far. I've also noticed that I have such a serious expression--for some reason my self-portraits are always like this. I think I'll aim for a different expression for the next one.

Anyway, I'll work on this more next week. Have a wonderful weekend and a happy Monday!

I finished the portrait and just made a few small changes from the last progress picture. Anyway, I've begun a self-portrait piece, and since I always struggle with those the most, we shall see how it progresses.

Charlie

I just finished this one--and stayed up a little too late working on it. Anyway, I'm actually doing a series of dog portraits for commission work. There will be a few others in the future scattered here and there in my posts.

Progress Picture #3: Smirk

Smirk by collage artist Megan Coyle

I'm almost done with this one! I think I just need one more session with it before I'm satisfied. There are a few details I want to work on with the face, as well as making the shirt a little less abstract, and making the background more consistent.

I probably won't work on this much tomorrow since I'm planning on getting started with my next commissioned piece.

Progress Picture #2: Smirk

I worked on blocking in a lot of the color in this piece, but I still have a little bit more to do before I can start working on the detail.

Progress Picture #1: Smirk

The portrait piece that I just started. More to come tomorrow, unless I get distracted with something else.
