The weekend has been a little hectic for me - I was busy getting prepared for a last minute exhibition I'm installing tomorrow morning/afternoon. Not to mention trying to get organized for my larger exhibitions that are coming up in the next few months. Lots of work on mailing lists and mapping out what needs to get done in the next few days.

I'm also beginning to make some plans with heading in a different direction with the way I use my blog. I want to continue to use it to post about my projects, recently finished artwork, and exhibitions, but I'd like to turn it into something that is more interactive for readers. I'm thinking of interviewing other artists and posting the interviews here, writing reviews of other exhibitions/museums, and creating a weekly project. It will be a while until I get everything organized, but I'm looking forward to changing gears.

Progress Picture #2: The New York Diner

Here's the next progress picture:

The New York Diner by collage artist Megan Coyle
I hope everyone's week is off to a good start - I'm a little exhausted from spending the entire day running around buying frames for future exhibitions and taking a look at the spaces where I'm going to show my artwork. I also got the word that a local library would like to have a small solo exhibition of my artwork in one of their galleries - the thing is they want the work up by March 1st which doesn't leave much time for preparation. We shall see what I can do...

Trip to NYC: Wandering the City

I'm back from my weekend getaway - and now I'm well equipped with plenty of photographs for inspiration. I'm a bit tired from all of the walking and excitement, but now I'm creatively refreshed and ready to get started on some new works of art.

We spent some time wandering the city when we arrived - taking a look at the ice skaters at Rockefeller Center.

We went into a few stores to stay warm - I liked the packaging on these chocolates in one of the shops.

We visited the MOMA - this is a detail image of one of the pieces of furniture in the design section.

Then we made our way to the Tim Burton exhibit - it was packed! I can't remember the last time I went to an exhibition that was as crowded as this one. It was great getting a chance to see some of his rough sketches as well as his more polished works of art. He's got quite the imagination!

I love the textures of some of buildings that I found in a few alleyways.

The Chinese New Year parade was going on this past Sunday - we went to grab some Dim Sum in Chinatown and got caught up in the crowds. We decided to buy some of the confetti poppers and set them off - here are a few of them in action.

Finished our NYC experience with a cannoli from Caffe Palermo in Little Italy. It was delicious.

Then after waiting an hour in the cold to catch our bus that was running late, we were off and on our way home.

Progress Picture #2: The Cafe

Here's the next progress picture - I wanted to post it before I head off on my trip tomorrow.

Trip to Richmond: Frame Shop and Exploration

This past weekend I went to Richmond with Ben and his parents - they picked up a framed collage that I was commissioned to do. I also wanted to get a better look at the city since I'm thinking about going back to school to get my MFA, and I've heard such good things about VCU.

I like the way frame shops look - there's something artistic and appealing about all the frame samples that line the walls.

We also strolled around the city, grabbing a bite to eat at Joe's Inn where some of us got breakfast for lunch. On the side of the restaurant, there were a few murals done by a nonprofit organization that works with kids.

We thought this part of the mural was particularly amusing - it looks like a bear shark/cat shark.

That's all for now. I'm actually headed up north tomorrow to NYC. And now I'm off to work on studio art for the day since I've spent the week reworking the structure of my website.

Progress Picture #1: The Cafe

Before heading off for the weekend with a trip to Richmond, I wanted to go ahead and post the quick sketch I did for my next figurative piece, "The Cafe." I'll work out the background once I start tackling this one with paper and glue.

I hope everyone has a wonderfully creative weekend!

Another zoo-inspired piece. These animal pieces are making me want to start working on a children's book. Once my hectic schedule of exhibitions passes by after the summer, I'll have a bit more time to tackle a plot and start thinking up characters. But we'll see, perhaps I'll have some time to work on this before then.

Lazy Polar Bear

"Lazy Polar Bear"

Here's my latest animal collage which is actually quite fitting for me right now - I'm feeling a lot like this guy. D.C. was hit with a snow blizzard, so I've been snowed in the past few days just lounging around.

Some Artful Reading and a Snowy Day

I finally finished retaking pictures for my newer artwork - I have yet to revisit a few older pieces. So soon, I can add better images to my site and elsewhere. Other than photographing art, the day was spent drinking tea and working on paper work.

And then paged through a couple more art books. So far I think my favorites are:
  1. Taking the Leap by Cay Lang - has plenty of info on framing art, putting on your own exhibitions, shipping artwork, legal information, as well as a lot of artist resources and organizations listed in the back.
  2. Art / Work by Heather Darcy Bhandari and Jonathan Melber - has some information similar to Cay Lang's book but also has lots of great samples of contracts for artists working on commission work, galleries, etc.
  3. The Artist's Guide by Jackie Battenfield - shares several similarities with the other books as far as topics covered go, but it does have some helpful information on grant writing and ways to fund your art.
  4. How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist by Carol Michels - helpful info on health insurance, putting on exhibitions, and has several lists of artist organizations.
Anyway, that's all for now. Closing the day with a late night in the studio.

Postcard Design

Today I worked a little bit on creating a new layout for my postcards that I pass out to people from time to time. I want to print out a new batch with my newer web address (mcoyle.com) as opposed to the older one I had (meganacoyle.com). I also thought it would be good to incorporate the same font I use for my logo so that there's more of a consistency with all of the documents I make up for my artwork.

I'll probably sleep on this and then figure out whether or not to get a batch printed.

The newer version on a white background.

The older format.

And now I'm off to work on a couple of pieces before bed. It's snowing again over here! Makes me want to go outside and run around in the cold.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. We had a beautiful snow day on Saturday - much to my surprise, I woke up to a winter wonderland.
