Snowflakes

And I've finished the Alice Childress quote piece. For X-mas, I received a light-kit and a nice Nikon camera, so now my collage pictures should look much brighter and more detailed. "Snowflakes" is the first collage I've taken pictures of with my new camera and kit.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a fun holiday - did you get any fun gifts?

Iguana

Here's another piece inspired by one of my trips to the National Zoo in DC, when I stopped by the Reptile House. I'm always finding compositions for future works of art there when I stroll around with my camera.

Progress Picture #2: Snowflakes

Here's the second progress picture for my latest piece. It's practically done--all I'll need to do is add the Alice Childress quote while touching up a few areas.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Mine was a busy one filled with holiday parties and plenty of eating. Whew, who would have thought that eating could wear you out?

Progress Picture #1: Snowflakes

Due to request, I've started working on a collage that illustrates the following quote by Alice Childress, "Like snowflakes, the human pattern is never cast twice."

Here's the beginning sketch for the piece:

Sometimes my sketches are used simply as guides for my pieces while other times I follow them pretty closely. This sketch is going to be used simply as a rough idea of the direction I want to go in. After collaging the figures, I'm going to lay down the text with magazine strips.

Scottish Terrier

Yet another dog breed for my dog series. I have a couple more that I'm planning on doing, and then I think I'll look into creating a number of cat portraits.

Anyway, here it is:

Mr. Whiskers the Blue Seal

Whew, it's been a busy week. Hope everyone is enjoy the holiday season - I've been busy with a lot of non-art related things, but once the new year rolls by, I'll have a lot more time to focus on my studio work.

Here's another one of my mini collages that's part of my winter series for my Etsy store:

Jack Russell Terrier

Here's the third and last dog collage I created this past weekend. I think I'll work on a few more dog portraits this upcoming weekend--I like the idea of illustrating a number of dog breeds.

The Smiling Golden Retriever

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. We got a little bit of snow the other day here--so it's really feeling like winter. I also had a chance to work on a few small dog collages for my Etsy shop. Here's the first one I've listed in the shop:

Looking like Hollywood

I've finished my most recent figurative piece at the moment - I might use this one for my upcoming exhibition in July. In general, I'm going to put my figurative work on hold for this exhibition and start focusing more on producing animal collages for my other show.

Back from Vacation

I just got back from a trip to the mountains for Thanksgiving weekend. I took a few pictures and I think I have some possible references for future collages.

I hope everyone had a great weekend--I'll post my more recent work later this week. Aside from getting away from the city this weekend, I was also able to concentrate on getting some more art completed.

Here are a few pictures from my trip:

In another sit-down, I should be able to finish this one up.

I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving! I'll be away until Sunday - and hopefully I'll have a little time to make some more art.

Purple Penguin

Whew, so many things to do, so little time. I'm going to be busy trying to catch up on a few things today before going off to the mountains for Turkey-day.

Anyway, here's a quick mini collage I did the other day:

Progress Picture #2: Looking like Hollywood

I'm really having some fun with the background on this one. I've been using a variety of textures from magazine pages as opposed to the more solid colors that I have a tendency of leaning towards.

It's been a busy night - I've been up a little late working on another batch of handmade magnets and planning out the beginnings of a newly commissioned piece. But I enjoy being busy and I can't wait to start some more art after finishing my current figurative piece.

Riverside Loungers

Riverside Loungers by Megan Coyle
And it's done! One of these days I'll need to revisit several of these portrait pieces to edit and prepare them for the exhibition in July. Whew, I've got a lot of work ahead of me!

I recently took on an internship to juggle with all my other work. Needless to say, I haven't quite gotten a chance to work on all the art-related things I've wanted to work on. Hopefully when I settle into a routine with my new work, I'll be able to do a better job at scheduling my time. However, I'll do my best to keep posting.

In other news, I got to thinking about some potential future collage portraits I could do. Last night I went to a Bob Dylan concert--and it was great getting a chance to see him live since you never know when he might decide to retire from touring. The concert made me think of a pencil drawing I did a few years ago for my Dylan-enthusiast boyfriend:

With all the Obama collage portraits I keep doing, I should change things up a bit and do a couple of Dylan ones.

Here's the next stage of my current piece:

Riverside Loungers by collage artist Megan Coyle
I'm juggling a couple other projects at the moment--hopefully I can scrounge together enough time to work on more magnets, a couple of mini collages, and work on a few more new animal collages. This week is going to be a little busy, so we'll see what happens.

Magnets

It's been a busy weekend for me thus far. I spent some time the other day creating more handmade magnets. There's still plenty more that I'd like to make, so my Etsy store is going to gradually fill up with them. Below is a picture of working on the acrylic backing for the magnets and what the finished product looks like--packaging and all.

Whew, it's been a busy week. Working away on collages--commissions and work for one of my solo exhibitions next year. I'm also working on preparations for packaging for handmade magnets that I'm going to add to my Etsy shop soon. I created some handmade magnets a while back, but now I'm going to work on a new batch with higher quality materials.

Anyway, here's my latest progress picture for my "Snorkeling" collage:

The Arts Build Communities

Yesterday I gallery-sat at the Del Ray Artisans for their "The Arts Build Communities" exhibition. I have a couple of collages on display there, "The Guitar Man" and "A Potomac River Afternoon," and both of them are marked Not for Sale since I might use them for my solo exhibition at the Art League Gallery in July. The exhibition opened on October 2nd and will last until the 25th.

Here are a few pictures I took of the exhibition:

I'm finished at the moment with this one--if you take a look at the last progress picture, you'll notice the piece hasn't changed too much. Thus I think I'll stay away from this collage for a bit and then I'll be able to return to it with new eyes.

Here's the next stage - I think the next time I get around to working on this I'll be able to finish it.

Hide and Seek by Megan Coyle

The other day I found out that I'll have a second solo exhibition next year. I think this other exhibition will focus more on animals, so there will be more larger animal collages posted in the future. All I need to do now is sign the contract to make it official.

My first solo exhibition is set for July of 2010 and my second show will be in August. Needless to say, I'll have a pretty busy summer.

And here's my next progress picture:

I like to take care of the background first so that it is indeed in the background as far as layering the pieces of paper go. I'm about half-way finished with the scenery here. The next time I work on this, I'll tackle the figure as well as the environment around her.

Progress Picture #4: Coney Island

I'm almost done--I think the next picture will be of the finished product.

Coney Island by Megan Coyle

I've got a lot on my "to do list" these days. At some point I'd like to finish these projects:
  1. Write and illustrate a children's book
  2. Create a black & white animal zoo series (similar to my "Hungry Hippo" collage)
  3. Start a series of scenes around D.C., Alexandria, and several other places I've visited over the years (where I've taken lots of pictures)
  4. Explore still life--expanding on my previous coffee cup series
At the moment, I've got my hands full with working on artwork for my first solo exhibition in July of 2010 and working towards my goal of completing one mini collage every week for my Etsy shop. Also, things can get a bit hectic with my two non-art-related jobs added to the mix. So many goals, so little time...well, we'll see about that. Just take one thing at a time.
